Visit Turkey to see its culture   by Lyuben Georgiev

If you travel to Turkey you will be able to learn much about the life of the Turkish people, their customs and culture.

The culture of Turkey (Do you know that the Danish call this country Tyrkiet?) is the successor of the ancient European and Asian cultures. From the Asian the strongest influence is of Arab, Armenian and Kurdish culture, and from the European – of the Byzantine, Greek and Bulgarian. Republic of Turkey is located in Western Asia and Southwestern Europe. From 14th to 16th century the Ottoman Empire was a major center for Islamic arts. When you travel to Turkey you will see that the architecture, calligraphy, ceramics and paintings from this period are well preserved. The Modern Turkish art emerged in the 19th century, when local artists began to experiment and acquire techniques and styles developed in Western Europe. Despite that the last 5 decades of Ottoman rule were at serious economic and political decline, they were also years of great artistic achievements. During this period, new newspapers popularized literary novels, plays and Poems; artists showed their works in galleries in Istanbul; musicians composed original works.

Artistic creativity declined in the years after the founding of the Republic of Turkey. Until the mid-20th century Turkish government played a central role in defining what is acceptable in art, especially in visual arts. The government encouraged artists to topics that describe the official image of the modern and secular society.

By the mid-19th century Turkish literature was centered around the Ottoman court. This literature, which included poetry and some prose, was a mix of Persian, Arabic and Turkish classical styles. Western influences began to invade in the 60 years of the 19th century with the books of the Young Ottomans – a group of intellectuals who tried to combine Western cultural forms with simplified forms in Turkish.

Come to visit Turkey and you will see its great historical architecture; especially wonderful are the mosques, designed and built in the time of Ottoman Empire. The modern buildings tend to imitate the European style of building materials – cement, bricks, and steel stringers.

As to the music and dances, there is a Presidential Symphony Orchestra that makes concerts each year in Ankara and other cities. It will be a great pleasure for you to hear it if you like such kind of art. Ankara and Istanbul have their own music conservatories and ballet schools.

When you travel to Turkey you will probably want to see some museums. They are located in the major cities. The most famous museums are Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara and the Ethnographic Museum in Istanbul, which contains Greek and Roman artifacts. One of the many historical sites in Istanbul is also Hagia Sophia – a Christian church from the sixth century, which was turned into a mosque and then into a museum. To find out more about Turkey, take a look at Wikipedia.

“How ironic,” Joyce Carol Oates writes in her introduction to this marvelous collection, “that in our age of rapid mass-production and the easy proliferation of consumer products, the richness and diversity of the American literary imagination should be so misrepresented in most anthologies.” Why, she asks, when writers such as Samuel Clemens, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, …
